A jug of cold water, with slices of lemon for flavor

The taste of water...

Here at Oshun, we're all about water. Actually, we're all about all kinds of hydration, and we're not too fussy, but ultimately, it always come back to water.

Once the preserve of the most hipster of coffee shops (and Jack's home pour-over setup) more and more people are turning to filtered water - and it's often about the taste.

So, firstly. What's the difference?

We're lucky enough in the UK to have tap water that's clean and safe. But, that doesn't mean it's all the same. Generally, what you’re tasting is the hardness, and maybe the treatment. Another thing that can make a big difference is the plumbing in your building.

What does that mean for the taste?

Hardness is... all about the calcium and magnesium hanging out in the water. If your water tastes a bit smoother, it's probably soft. If it's got a bit more of a distinct, some might say 'minerally' vibe, then it's hard. This can really change up how your drinks, like tea and coffee, taste.

Water treatment in the UK is... all for keeping us safe. It might mean a bit of chlorine here, some fluoridation there, and making sure no nasties are in the water. Essential, yes, but it can leave a slight taste that some of us might not be too keen on. It's like the water's way of saying, 'I'm clean!' but maybe a bit too loudly for your taste buds.

The plumbing - especially in older buildings or blocks of flats... can add its own twist to your water's taste. Different pipes (think copper, lead in really old places, or PVC) can add their own 'flavour'. And if those pipes are a bit on the older side, with some corrosion or buildup, it might make your water taste a bit metallic or even musty. Not the best for a refreshing sip.

What can you do if you’re not a fan?

A quick Google on “London water taste” brings up a lot of people who are less than satisfied with the taste of London water! We reckon there’s a few great ways to improve it;

  1. Let is sit & chill. Chlorine naturally evapourates, in around 24 hours in the fridge. Fill up a jug, and let it chill.
  2. Filter it. A water filter can help remove that taste, and you’ll only need to wait a few minutes. If
  3. Add something to it. Whether it’s a slice of lemon, a dash of cordial, or even your new favourite electrolyte concentrate, Oshun 👀 - adding a little extra to your water really helps

What about doing all three?

Hydration is key, and loving what you drink makes it a whole lot easier. Here at Oshun, we’re big fans of enjoying your water, every single sip of it.
